I’m a huge fan of Mel Robbins! I always find something that strikes a chord with me when I listen to her. And this morning, I remembered something I learned from her ages ago… in a very uncomfortable way.
It’s the 5-Second Rule…
Haven’t heard of it? Well, basically it means just say to yourself ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1’ — like a rocket blasting off — and then take action.
I was reminded of how helpful this rule is again this morning. I could hear Mel’s voice telling the story of how she came up with it in the first place: ‘Don’t snooze your alarm!’
Why not? Because according to sleep research — and I’m paraphrasing — if you ‘snooze’ you’ll get something like nine more minutes of slumber, right? What is most likely to happen is that you’ll fall back asleep and then when your alarm rings, you’ll be in deep sleep mode. You’ll wake up, but it will be so much harder than if you had just done ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1’ and gotten up at the first bell.
That was me today! Ugh.
So next time, I’ll just tell myself ‘5, 4, 3, 2, 1’ and then take action.
Thanks, Mel!
